About us and these terms
Blanket in England and Wales is run by Blanket Legal Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales with company number 16991632, whose registered office is at 71-75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London, WC2H 9JQ, United Kingdom. “We”, “us” and “Blanket” mean Blanket Legal Ltd. “You” means the person using our service.
We are a will-writing service. We are not a firm of solicitors, we are not regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, and we do not give tax advice. Our page on how we are regulated explains what this means for you.
Please read these terms alongside our privacy notice.
Our checkout today
Our online checkout does not take payments. Pressing Pay records your interest in the plan and shows “We’re at capacity right now”. This means:
- nothing is charged, and we do not ask for or collect your card details;
- no order is placed and no contract to prepare your documents is formed;
- we do not start work on your will or lasting power of attorney; and
- your answers stay saved in this browser, and we may email you when we can accept your order.
If you would rather we did not contact you, email hello@blanket.family. You can also ask us to delete your account and answers, as our privacy notice explains.
Our service
The service terms below apply only if you later place a paid order that we accept. Pressing Pay in our current checkout does not place a paid order.
Our contract with you
Our contract starts when we email to confirm your order. We may decline an order before then, and we will refund anything you have paid if we do.
What we do
What is included depends on the plan you choose, as described on our wills and international wills pages when you order. In summary:
- Wills: we prepare a will under the law of England and Wales, based on the instructions you give us online or on a call. We send you your will to check, make the changes you ask for, then print and post the final will to you with a signing guide. When you send it back, we check it has been signed correctly.
- Lasting powers of attorney: we prepare your forms from your instructions, guide you and the other people involved through signing, check the signed forms and send them to the Office of the Public Guardian for registration.
- International wills: we prepare your will for England and Wales so it is worded to work alongside a will you have, or plan to make, in another country.
We will provide our service with reasonable care and skill, and within the timescales we tell you.
What we do not do
- We do not give tax advice, including inheritance tax planning.
- We do not give advice on the law or tax of any country other than England and Wales.
- We do not act in disputes, such as a challenge to a will or a disagreement between family members or attorneys.
- We do not apply for probate or deal with the administration of an estate.
- We do not act as your witness, executor or attorney, and we never name ourselves in your will.
If your situation needs something we do not do, we will tell you, and suggest you speak to a solicitor or other specialist. Our page on how we are regulated gives examples.
When we may not be able to help
We may decline to prepare a document, or stop work, if we are concerned that you may not have the mental capacity to make it, that someone may be pressuring you, or that your needs go beyond what we do. If that happens we will explain why and refund what you have paid for work we have not done.
Your responsibilities
- Give us accurate and complete information, and tell us if anything changes before your documents are signed.
- Read your will carefully and tell us if anything is wrong or not what you want.
- Sign your will exactly as our signing guide explains. In England and Wales you must sign in front of two witnesses who are both present at the same time and who then sign too. A witness should be an adult who is not a beneficiary and is not married to, or the civil partner of, a beneficiary. If a beneficiary or their spouse or civil partner witnesses your will, their gift may fail.
- Sign your lasting powers of attorney in the order the forms set out, with the right witnesses and certificate provider, and return them to us.
- Keep your will under review. Getting married or forming a civil partnership usually cancels an earlier will, and divorce changes how it works. A new child, a move abroad or a change in what you own may also mean your will needs updating.
We are not responsible for problems caused by information you gave us that was wrong or incomplete, or by documents not being signed as our guide explains.
Prices and payment
Our prices are shown on our wills and international wills pages. The price you pay is the one shown when you place your order. Before taking payment, we will explain how it is processed.
The Office of the Public Guardian charges a fee to register each lasting power of attorney. This fee is separate from our price and is paid to the government, not to us. You may be able to pay a reduced fee, or no fee, depending on your income or if you receive certain benefits. We will tell you the fee that applies before we send your forms.
Changes to your will are free for the first year after you sign it. After that, each change costs £49, and we confirm the price before we start. You pay once for your order: there is no subscription and nothing renews.
Your right to cancel
Under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013, you can cancel your order within 14 days of the day our contract starts, without giving a reason.
We will only start work within those 14 days if you expressly ask us to, which you can do at checkout. If you ask us to start and then cancel within the 14 days, we will refund what you paid, less a fair amount for the work we have already done up to the point you told us you were cancelling.
To cancel, email hello@blanket.family with your name and a clear statement that you want to cancel. You can use the model cancellation form we send with your order confirmation, but you do not have to. We will refund you within 14 days of hearing from you, to the payment method you used.
We can refund the registration fee only if we have not yet sent it to the Office of the Public Guardian. Once it has been paid, the Office of the Public Guardian decides whether to refund it.
Your right to cancel does not affect your other legal rights.
If something goes wrong
If we make a mistake, please tell us and we will put it right. Our complaints process explains how.
We are responsible for loss you suffer that is a foreseeable result of us breaking these terms or failing to use reasonable care and skill. Loss is foreseeable if it is obvious it will happen, or if we both knew it might happen when our contract started. We are not responsible for loss that is not foreseeable.
We provide our service for your personal use. We are not responsible for loss of business, profit or opportunity.
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that cannot be limited or excluded by law, including your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Subject to that, our liability is limited as far as the law allows.
Storing your documents
If your plan includes storage, we keep your original signed will safely, free of charge, and send it to you, or to your executors after your death, free of charge whenever asked. We may ask for proof of identity or authority before releasing it.
Ending our contract
You can end our contract at any time by telling us. After the 14-day cancellation period, we will refund anything you have paid for work we have not yet done. We may end our contract if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms, and we will refund anything you have paid for work we have not yet done.
General
Events outside our control
We are not responsible for delays caused by events outside our reasonable control, such as postal strikes or delays at the Office of the Public Guardian. We will tell you if this happens and do what we can to limit the effect.
Other terms
- We may transfer our rights and obligations to another organisation. We will tell you if this happens, and it will not affect your rights.
- Only you and we have rights under these terms. Nobody else can enforce them under the Contracts (Rights of Third Parties) Act 1999.
- If a court decides part of these terms is invalid, the rest still applies.
- If we do not enforce a term straight away, we can still enforce it later.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms, for example when the law changes. The terms that apply to your order are the ones in force when you place it. If we need to change them after that, we will tell you first.
Which law applies
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales can hear any dispute. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring proceedings in your local courts.
